Introduction

To Live is a representative work of contemporary writer Yu Hua. It tells the story of a person's life full of vicissitudes and hardships, and also condenses the social changes in China over half a century. To Live also tells the broadness and richness of tears; tells the non-existence of despair; tells that people live for the sake of living itself, not for anything other than living.

In the 25 years since its publication, To Live has touched countless readers. After years of precipitation, it has become a well-deserved classic of 20th century Chinese literature. To date, it has been translated into more than 30 countries and regions including England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and Russia, and has won many literary awards at home and abroad. Yu Hua also won the French Order of Arts and Knight of Culture in 2004 for this work.

Revised and republished 25 years later, I believe that "To Live" will still touch the hearts of each of us with its spiritual core that transcends time and space.
